architectural afternoon

Hansaviertel, Berlin. Buildings of the Interbau 1957.

Berlin isn't Bilbao. Yet you can do a fine walk and at the same time go and see some architectural goodies. We did and enjoyed.

Although listing the names of the architects who contributed to the Hansaviertel would be some kind of name dropping, the impression one gets today maybe won't be immediately breathtaking. Things become really interesting if you see them in front their historical background, though. Modern but modest, free and democratic. What was the idea of "die stadt von morgen", "the city of tomorrow"? In Germany, in the 1950s. Did it work, didn't it? Why?
